Who Benefits The Most From Situationships?
By Khayree M. Beckem
Hookup culture has fundamentally reshaped modern relationships and not for the better. What used to be a dating market rooted in courtship, intention, and long-term vision has now shifted into a fast-paced system of temporary gratification. Social media has accelerated this shift, opening the floodgates to non-commitment, endless options, and surface-level connections.
Today, many people are no longer building relationships they are engaging in temporary emotional and physical transactions.
At the center of this shift is a growing dynamic known as the situationship.
The Psychological Shift Behind Situationships
Social media platforms have created a constant loop of comparison and desire. Individuals, particularly women are exposed daily to curated lifestyles that appear bigger, better, and more fulfilling than their own. This taps directly into a psychological mechanism known as hypergamy, the innate drive to seek improvement in status, experience, and provision.
But here’s where it becomes destructive:
When the mind is constantly chasing “better,” it loses the ability to appreciate the “present.”
This creates a state of chronic dissatisfaction, where no partner ever feels like enough because there’s always the illusion of something greater around the corner. Over time, this mindset conditions individuals to avoid commitment altogether, leading them into situationships connections without defined structure, accountability, or long-term direction.
Situationships Are Inherently One-Sided
Situationships often benefit the person who does not want commitment.
In most cases, that tends to be men.
This dynamic is clearly illustrated in my reaction to Cam Newton’s Funky Friday Podcast featuring Kendra G. Watch the breakdown here: https://youtu.be/PXSsSgjzI-o
In a situationship, the non-committal partner gets access to:
- Intimacy
- Companionship
- Emotional support
- Physical pleasure
All without responsibility, obligation, or long-term investment.
For men, this creates a “best of both worlds” scenario enjoying a woman in the present without sacrificing freedom for the future.
The Hidden Psychological Cost for Women
On the other side, many women enter situationships and unknowingly operate in a wife like capacity without receiving wife-level commitment.
This creates a dangerous psychological loop:
- Emotional Investment Without Security
- Attachment Without Stability
- Giving Without Receiving
Over time, this leads to emotional burnout, trauma accumulation, and a diminished sense of self-worth.
But it goes deeper than behavior…it rewires the brain.
Pair Bonding, Dopamine, and Emotional Numbing
From a psychological and biological standpoint, repeated casual encounters impact a woman’s ability to form deep emotional connections.
During intimacy, the brain releases:
- Oxytocin (bonding hormone)
- Dopamine (pleasure/reward chemical)
For women, oxytocin plays a major role in emotional attachment. It naturally drives a desire to bond, connect, and build closeness after intimacy.
However, in situationships, this natural response becomes suppressed over time.
To survive repeated non-committal encounters, a woman must emotionally detach from her own bonding instincts. This creates a form of psychological numbing, a defense mechanism that protects her from repeated disappointment.
The long-term result?
- Reduced ability to pair bond
- Difficulty forming deep emotional connections
- Increased detachment in future relationships
Eventually, she may find herself unable to fully invest in a genuine relationship, not because she isn’t worthy, but because her emotional system has been conditioned for detachment.
The Energy Men Recognize (But Rarely Explain)
Men who have experience with women can often sense this pattern without necessarily articulating it.
It shows up as:
- Emotional inconsistency
- Lack of attachment
- Quick detachment after conflict
- A “replaceable” mindset
This is what many refer to as “energy.”
In reality, it’s behavioral conditioning and psychological imprinting.
As a result, men may subconsciously categorize her as:
- “Fun”
- “Temporary”
- “Non-committal”
Which reinforces the very cycle she’s trying to escape.
Breaking the Situationship Cycle
Escaping this loop requires intentional behavior change and psychological awareness.
Here’s the truth most avoid:
You cannot participate in casual dynamics and expect committed outcomes.
To offset situationships:
1. Set Expectations Early
Clarity eliminates confusion. If commitment is the goal, it must be communicated upfront not negotiated later.
2. Control Access
Physical intimacy is leverage. When given too early, it removes the need for investment.
3. Make Him Invest
Time, energy, effort, these are the foundations of attachment. People value what they invest in.
4. Stand Out Through Discipline
In a culture where access is easy, restraint becomes rare and therefore valuable.
The woman who separates herself from the crowd is the one who:
- Is not easily impressed
- Is not easily accessible
- Is not driven by validation
This shifts perception.
Instead of being seen as “available,” she becomes seen as valuable.
Final Thought
Situationships are not random they are the result of patterns, choices, and psychological conditioning.
While they may offer short-term satisfaction, they often create long-term consequences especially for those seeking love, stability, and legacy.
The question is no longer “Who benefits?”
The real question is:
“What are you conditioning yourself for?”
